Manslaughter charge after airgun shooting

Police have charged an 18-year-old man with manslaughter over the death of a south Auckland man shot with an airgun while a group of friends were drinking.

Shawn Townsley, 18, was drinking with four friends and shooting targets on a fence in Manurewa last month when he was shot with the airgun. He died soon after he arrived at Middlemore Hospital.

On Thursday, police said they had arrested and charged the 18-year-old with manslaughter. He will appear in Manukau District Court on Friday.

After the shooting, police initially said there was no indication that the shooting was deliberate but an investigation would determine whether charges would be laid.

"This tragedy should serve as a painful reminder that these weapons are not toys and need to be used in a controlled environment by responsible people with appropriate target awareness and knowledge of their power," Detective Inspector Dave Lynch said.
