Homicide team takes over after Surrey man found dead in car

Police say a 29-year-old missing Surrey man found dead in a car last night was the victim of a homicide.

The victim has been identified as 29-year-old Vimal Chand, who disappeared last weekend.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the case.

"I can confirm that the body of the young man located inside the car was that of 29 -year-old Vimal Chand of Surrey. This investigation is in the very early stages and the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Chand are yet to be determined," said IHIT Cpl. Bari Emam.

The body was spotted inside the car by a resident of Surrey's Newton neighbourhood who said the vehicle had been parked on the street for three or four days.

Police say the car was parked near Hyland Elementary School, near 66th Avenue and 140th Street.

Chand had a criminal record, including a conviction for assault with a weapon, but his sister described him as a family man who hadn't been leading a high risk lifestyle.
