Homicide Detectives Investigate Body Found In Mount Vernon Fire

Authorities in Mount Vernon believe a man found dead in a burned-out home was murdered.

Firefighters responded to an apartment fire shortly after 7:30 p.m. Thursday night and found 52-year-old Brad Grossup's body inside.

Neighbors and friends talked to 10TV about Grosscup.

"Knowing somebody would have to die like that. I just think it's terrible," his friend Charlie Vance said.

Kathleen Rutka lived next door to Grossup and said she saw the flames and feared Grossup, her friend, was inside.

"I was beating that door down, beating it down, screaming his name," Rutka said.

Investigators believe Grossup's body may have been in the apartment for one or two days before the Shirley Avenue fire actually started, leading them to believe he was murdered.

Knox County Coroner Jennifer Ogle said that no soot was found in the man's airway and his body had started to decompose.

Rutka said her friend's death is even tougher to take thinking that someone killed him.

"He was great. He was the best person in the world."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

No one else was injured in the fire.

Nine people who lived in the other apartments in the building are getting help from the Red Cross.

Manslaughter charges possible in boy's death

Published: Thursday, August 23, 2012, 5:55 p.m. MONROE -- Detectives believe a 7-year-old Monroe boy's parents should face second-degree manslaughter charges in connection with his January overdose death. Monroe police this week wrapped up their probe into the boy's Jan. 30 death and forwarded the case to prosecutors to decide if his parents should face criminal charges. Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Lisa Paul likely will begin reviewing the case in the coming days. She doesn't expect to make a charging decision in the near future, however. "It's quite an extensive investigation, and I want to review it thoroughly before I make any decision," she said.
