Homicide defendant charged with more crimes

A Mauston man charged with homicide in the 2011 drug death of a 29-year-old man has more problems.

Darin J. Skiff, 49, who was free on a $ 10,000 signature bond, was arrested early Saturday morning after he stole a car parked in front of a Mauston tavern and crashed it into a parked vehicle, according to a criminal complaint.

According to the new criminal complaint:

A Mauston police officer dispatched to a crash near the intersection of Hanover and Maine streets at 2:30 a.m. Feb. 16 arrived to find Skiff sitting in the snow near a parked minivan that had been struck by a car whose engine was still running.

Both vehicles were badly damaged and neither was occupied. Skiff, who appeared drunk, told the officer he had been walking home when he encountered the crash scene and denied driving either vehicle.

"Darin went on to say that he would have run away from the scene and not stayed to wait for the police had he been driving," the complaint states.

A woman who looked out the window of a nearby home when she heard the crash told the officer that she had seen Skiff get out of the car.

About the same time the owner of the car reported it stolen from the spot she had left it parked near Randall's Uptown Bar in Mauston.

Skiff admitted drinking but continued to deny that he had been driving the car. He banged his head continually against the window of the police car in which he was transported to the Juneau County jail and had to be restrained from continuing to do so inside the jail, where authorities removed stimulant prescription drugs from his pockets.

Last October, Skiff and two others were charged in the drug-related death of Jeremy Haas of Mauston, who died in November 2011 from an overdose of a prescription pain reliever that prosecutors allege Skiff and the others illegally provided him. In May, before the homicide charge, Skiff was charged with selling cocaine.

In the new case, Skiff was charged with car theft, two counts of possession of narcotic drugs, two counts of bail jumping and resisting arrest. On Tuesday, Judge John Roemer imposed cash bond of $ 10,000 and scheduled an initial court appearance March 6.
