Homicide in Auckland's Half Moon Bay

A 24-year-old man has died of knife wounds in his East Auckland house while another man with knife wounds has crashed his car into the side of a house but is expected to survive, police say.

Detective Inspector Jim Gallagher told Fairfax Media that they have opened a homicide investigation into the death of the man in his home at Fiesta Drive in Half Moon Bay at 11.30 pm yesterday.

They've connected it to the car which crashed soon after the death 3.5 kilometres away in Gossford Drive, Pakuranga

"It is a link because we believe the driver of the car and the deceased are known to each other," Gallagher said.

"We believe a knife is involved....

"There is nothing to suggest any one else at this early stage is involved," he said.

Gallagher said the dead man's body remained in the house for forensic examination while the police were considering a number of theories, including whether the knife injuries on the man in the car were self inflicted.

He says the man was driving a distinctive two door 1996 Mitsubishi Mirage Sport and police wanted to hear from anybody who saw it between 9.30pm to 11pm between Half Moon Bay, Pakuranga and Botany Downs.

"It was a significant crash in terms of the car taking out a lamp post and then collided with a deck part of the house," Gallagher said.

The man found in the car wreck is in Middlemore Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Anyone who has information that will assist them is asked to call Counties Manukau Police on 09 261 1300 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 and refer to Operation Katy.
