Homicide suspect charged with child pornography

RACINE — A Sturtevant man accused of first-degree manslaughter is now facing nine counts of possession of child pornography.

Local law enforcement learned about the alleged sexually explicit images and videos as well as a membership to a child pornography website during an investigation into Keith M. Abbott, 49, for the stabbing death of a Racine woman in early 2011, according to a criminal complaint.

A computer that was reportedly used by Abbott at his residence in the 8600 block of Camelot Trace was voluntarily turned over to the Racine County Sheriff's Office as part of the manslaughter investigation, according to the complaint, and later analyzed by the Department of Justice, who discovered nine images and four videos of child pornography.

The materials also were submitted to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children who reported to the Sheriff's Office that five images and four videos located on the computer were identified as known victims of child pornography, according to the complaint.

Abbott also had been the subject of a Department of Homeland Security investigation after a federal warrant reportedly revealed that he had registered at a child pornography website and had allegedly provided the site with his credit card information, according to the complaint.

The federal investigation reportedly showed that Abbott signed on as a member of the website in March 2009 and listed his address as 2700 Sheridan Road, which was the location of Creative Woods, the man's cabinetmaking business.

In addition to child pornography, an investigator also "observed several hundred photos of different types of death to different human beings" on the computer, according to the complaint, and noted that there were a number of websites visited that showed women getting choked and talked about women being raped.

Abbott had been charged with allegedly killing the mother of his step-granddaughter and dumping her body in a ravine in Rock County.

A Rock County judge ruled on Feb. 21 that Abbott was not competent to stand trial.

He made his initial appearance in Racine County Court on the child pornography charges on Thursday and court commissioner John Bjelajac set cash bond in the case at $ 250,000.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for March 26.
