Merced homicide suspect arrested in Oakland

MERCED -- Merced Police this morning announced the arrest this week of a suspect in a homicide 11 months ago.

According to a news release, police arrested Charles Anthony Jones, 32, in Oakland on Wednesday afternoon as he left the home of his girlfriend's mother.

Jones was wanted in the gunshot death of Donald Risner Jan. 13 in the 100 block of West 18th Street in Merced.

Police responding to a call of shots fired found Risner on the south side of the street suffering from gun shots wounds. Investigators determined that Risner had been arguing with a man over a bicycle and the man shot him. Police later received a tip that the individual who had shot Risner went by the first name of Charles.

Detective Robert Solis learned that Charles Jones lived in the immediate area of the shooting. A witness identified Jones as the shooting suspect. Police searched an apartment in the 200 block of West 19th Street where Jones was believed to have been staying with his girlfriend, Nakeisha Williams.

Williams reportedly told police her relationship with Jones ended the previous November. Police said they didn't believe Williams was being cooperative.

A warrant was issued for Jones' arrest. Last month, Jones walked into the Oakland Police Department and asked for a warrants check on himself. He took off before the check was completed.

Solis learned that Jones's girlfriend might be staying at the address in Oakland. Merced police notified Oakland officers, who arrested Jones this week without incident.

Merced detectives searched the Oakland home. They have not recovered the gun.

Authorities said they questioned Jones, who said he wasn't in Merced at the time the shooting took place. He was booked into Merced County Jail on a charge of homicide.

EVERETT -- Police on Wednesday were canvassing the View Ridge-Madison neighborhood in Everett after a man was found dead there the night before. A neighbor spotted the man on the ground outside a vacant house at 22 Madison St. He called 911 about 6:20 p.m. The man had obvious signs of trauma to his torso, police said. He looked to be in his late 20s or early 30s. The Everett Major Crimes Unit is investigating the death as a homicide, Lt. Robert Goetz said. Detectives declined to say more about how they believe the man may have died. There are no identified suspects or motives. Detectives received a search warrant around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday and collected evidence at the scene. They returned Wednesday afternoon to look for clues in the daylight, Goetz said. Manslaughter charges possible in boy's death

Published: Thursday, August 23, 2012, 5:55 p.m. MONROE -- Detectives believe a 7-year-old Monroe boy's parents should face second-degree manslaughter charges in connection with his January overdose death. Monroe police this week wrapped up their probe into the boy's Jan. 30 death and forwarded the case to prosecutors to decide if his parents should face criminal charges. Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Lisa Paul likely will begin reviewing the case in the coming days. She doesn't expect to make a charging decision in the near future, however. "It's quite an extensive investigation, and I want to review it thoroughly before I make any decision," she said. The boy, identified as "A.J." in court papers, ingested a lethal amount of salicylates, a chemical common in aspirin and other over-the-counter drugs.
