A man fatally shot in the Austin neighborhood Wednesday was the city's 500th homicide of 2012, authorities said.

The victim, whose age was not immediately available, was shot in the head about 9 p.m. in the 4900 block of West Augusta, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines, citing preliminary information.

He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died, Gaines said.

Last year, there were 435 homicides, according to city records. The city surpassed that total in October.

The last year the city's homicide total reached 500 was in 2008, when 512 people were killed, according to police department records.
