Investigation continuing into Trades Towers homicide in Five Points South area

2012-12-23_15-13-24_598.jpgThe Birmingham Police Department is continuing an investigation into a homicide that occurred at the Trades Towers residential building in the Five Points South area on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 23, 2012.  

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- The Birmingham Police Department tonight is not releasing the identities of the victim and suspect at the center of the homicide investigation involving a shooting earlier at the Trades Towers in the Five Points South area.

Birmingham police and other emergency personnel responded to the report of a shooting at the residential building at 2021 10th Ave. South just before 3 p.m. today.

In a statement released tonight, Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams said detectives are conducting a homicide investigation. "The victim's identity will be released pending notification of immediate family," according to the statement.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office tonight also would not release the victim's name.

Information about the suspect's identity was not immediately available from authorities.

"The suspect is in the custody of the Birmingham City Jail," according to the police statement. "Additional suspect information will be released once warrant procedures are complete."

South Precinct officers responded to the report of a person shot and at the scene found the suspect who surrendered to officers. Police located the victim on the ground in the lobby suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, according to the statement.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on scene and pronounced the victim dead.

"Investigators learned that both suspects were involved in an altercation just before the shooting," according to the statement.
