Homicide investigation underway in Fort Myers

FORT MYERS -

A murder investigation is underway just two doors down from where a fire broke out early Sunday morning in Fort Myers.

It is the 24th murder that has happened in Fort Myers in 2012.

Right now, Lafayette Street is blocked off as the investigation continues.

We had originally gone to the scene after learning that six dogs had been rescued from a house fire.

Firefighters say they rushed to the 2300 block of Lafayette Street around 4 a.m. Sunday.

Officials we spoke to say when the crews arrived, heard barking coming from inside the home so they ran in to save the six dogs that were all found in cages.

Adrian Torres, who lives in the home, said he had just gotten off of work and came home to find fire trucks and police cars surrounding his home

"I went around the home and saw my bedroom was the one that caught fire. They told me it was an electrical issue," said Torres.

And right after we spoke with him, Torres came running outside again and asked our crew to call 911 – saying that a neighbor was on the floor and bleeding severely at 2355 Lafayette Street.

Police then rushed back to the scene. And since that time, more police have started to show up. Officials we spoke to say they will be conducting a search warrant at that address.

Police have not yet said whether they believe the house fire and death to be related.

No other information was immediately available. But our crew will remain on scene and you will be able to find updates right here on this site.
