Woman admits murder bid on friend
A woman has admitted attempting to murder a friend who gave her shelter after her own home was damaged by fire.
Jacqueline Reuston, 46, stabbed Karen Sutherland 45 times after being ordered out of her flat in Sighthill, Glasgow.
The victim, 45, spent two days in hospital after the attack on 27 May.
Sentence on Reuston, who has a history of mental illness, was deferred by judge Lord Stewart at the High Court in Glasgow and she was ordered to remain within the city's Rowanbank Clinic.
The court heard how Ms Sutherland had allowed Reuston to stay the night after her own home had been damaged by fire.
Cooker onThe next morning, Ms Sutherland went to visit relatives and expected Reuston to have gone by the time she returned.
When she came back, she ordered Reuston to leave after finding all the rings on the cooker turned on, as well as the grill and oven.
Prosecutor Murdoch MacTaggart said: "Without any apparent warning, the accused then produced a knife from her jeans.
"Ms Sutherland turned her back and was conscious of being stabbed repeatedly to her back."
The court heard how the victim felt blood in her eyes and believed she was "going to lose her life".
The badly injured victim managed to stagger away and into a lift where other residents discovered her.
Permanently scarredA 999 call was made and Ms Sutherland was taken to the city's Royal Infirmary, where she spent two days in intensive care before being allowed to return home.
The court heard her injuries were life-threatening and she will be permanently scarred.
Following the attack, a blood-stained Reuston visited her sister's home and said she had "done Karen in".
Reuston, who still had the knife, was later detained and claimed she had been acting in self defence.
It emerged in court that she was on bail at the time of the attack, having been charged with racially aggravated harassment and assaulting an emergency worker.
