San Mateo bus stop death draws manslaughter charge

REDWOOD CITY -- Prosecutors on Monday filed a vehicular manslaughter charge against a driver they say sped away from a crash that left a 67-year-old man dead at a San Mateo bus stop.

Josue Lopez, 26, of San Mateo did not enter a plea to the charges in San Mateo County Superior Court Monday and remained behind bars in lieu of $ 250,000 bail, said District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

Lopez allegedly plowed his speeding Chevrolet Camaro into a concrete garbage can that sat next to a bus stop on the 1700 block of South Delaware Street after losing control of it Saturday morning. The collision tossed the can several feet into Reynaldo Aguiniga of San Mateo, pinning him against a tree.

Lopez, who had a 5-year-old child in the back seat, allegedly checked on the victim after the crash, traded some words with him, and then drove off. Authorities rushed Aguiniga to the hospital where he died.

Horrified witnesses wrote the license plate number of the car and took note of the driver's appearance. Police tracked Lopez and the Camaro to his San Mateo home, where officers arrested him the same day.

Aguiniga's cause of death remained under investigation, Wagstaffe said. Regardless of how the victim died, the driver is still considered legally responsible for the death, he added.

Lopez is due back in court Dec. 4 for arraignment on one felony count each of vehicular manslaughter as well as hit and run. Prosecutors have also filed one charge

of misdemeanor child endangerment due to the child's presence during the crash.

Flint's battlefield: A three-year murder map

FLINT, MI -- There have been 189 murders in the city since 2010. Below is a map of the locations of each murder in the last three years, as well as the names of the slain on Flint's battlefield. The spike in murders occurred almost immediately after large-scale layoffs in March of 2010. By year's end the city had set a record with 66 murders, breaking the previous mark of 61 set in 1986.
