Man wanted on homicide charges arrested in Arizona

A man wanted on homicide charges in Pittsburgh was apprehended by U.S. Marhsals in Tuscon, Ariz. today after remaining on the lam for nearly two years.

Jarrell A. Liddell, 33, faces charges of homicide, criminal attempt homicide, aggravated assault and gun violations in connection with the Jan. 16, 2011, killing of Ronald Washington in the Hill District.

Pittsburgh police said Mr. Washington and his friend, Chanel Hopkins, 20, left a friend's house in the 200 block of Lombard Street about 2:15 a.m. on Jan. 16. Shortly after they entered their vehicle, police said, two men approached them. One of them, identified by police as Mr. Liddell, fired multiple rounds into the car. Mr. Washington was struck in the chest; Ms. Hopkins suffered gunshot wounds throughout her body, police said, but her injuries were not life-threatening.

The U.S. Marshals Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force, which includes local and federal law enforcement, tracked down Mr. Liddell to Arizona, where they believe he was living under his brother's name. Members of the U.S. Marshals District of Arizona Task Force arrested him without incident at a Tuscon gas station today. He was taken to the Pima County Jail where he was awaiting extradition to Pittsburgh.

Flint's battlefield: A three-year murder map

FLINT, MI -- There have been 189 murders in the city since 2010. Below is a map of the locations of each murder in the last three years, as well as the names of the slain on Flint's battlefield. The spike in murders occurred almost immediately after large-scale layoffs in March of 2010. By year's end the city had set a record with 66 murders, breaking the previous mark of 61 set in 1986. Killing continued in 2011 with 57 murders. A look at the map shows the majority of the murders took place on the north and east sides, historically the most economically depressed areas of the city. Just 25 murders in the last three years occurred south of Court Street. The map is color-coded by year.
