IHIT investigating 'obvious' homicide
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is investigating the death of a woman in her 40s who was found in a Surrey basement suite Thursday night.
At about 7 p.m., police were called by a resident who found the dead woman in the house in the 8400-block of 148th A Street, next to Maple Green elementary in the Fleetwood neighbourhood.
IHIT spokesman Cpl. Adam MacIntosh said Friday the woman likely died sometime Thursday before she was found by the resident who phoned 911.
"Sometimes it's obvious that the person didn't fall and have a heart attack," MacIntosh said. "So in this particular case it was readily apparent to investigators that this person died (as) the result of a homicide."
The woman is a Surrey resident, but MacIntosh would not confirm if she lived in one of the home's two basement suites, just that she "wasn't a stranger" to residents at the address. He also noted investigators do not believe her death is related to drug or gang activity.
Investigators will be on scene for at least another day while they try to figure out what happened.
The woman's family have been notified of her death and IHIT should release her name Saturday, MacIntosh said.
Police are asking anyone who might have seen something suspicious in the area to call RCMP.
