31 July 2012 Last updated at 13:06 ET Doyle's sentence was backdated to 11 March this year A 34-year-old man from County Wicklow has been sentenced to 11 years for the homicide of a three-month-old baby. Philip Doyle of Tinakilly, Aughrim, was found guilty last week of the homicide of Ross Murphy in April 2005. The baby was his ex-fiancée Leona Murphy's child. Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy said it was a case of assault homicide and went far beyond a situation where an individual lost temper. He described it as a case of significant violence on a child in the absence of his mother. Doyle's sentence was backdated to 11 March this year. At hearing, loved ones recall Camden homicide victim No. 24

Image
To the record-keepers, Alma Reyes Brito is homicide victim No. 24 in Camden this particularly bloody year. But her loved ones put a face to that number in court and at an anti-violence rally on Tuesday. Family and friends wore T-shirts bearing her portrait at a morning hearing where her 15-year boyfriend was ordered held on $ 2 million bail on charges he murdered Brito, 49, in early June. Brito's body was found June 4 in a bedroom on the second floor of a home the couple had shared in the city's Fairview section. She died of blunt force trauma to the head and neck, according to authorities. William W. White, 59, who was arraigned in Superior Court in Camden County, has said he beat Brito with a handgun on June 2, according to Camden County Prosecutor's Office. Brito's family wept and embraced when he entered the courtroom. "I don't know why he did this to my baby," said her mother, Doris Malaeet, 68, in an interview after the arraignment. Seei

Army sergeant acquitted of negligent murder in soldier's death

Image
WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (Reuters) - A military jury found a U.S. Army sergeant not guilty on Monday of a negligent murder charge stemming from the suicide of a Chinese-American soldier who officials say endured hazing and racial slurs . Sergeant Adam Holcomb , 30, was the first of eight soldiers to face a court-martial in connection with Private Danny Chen 's death last October. The military panel who heard Holcomb's case in Fort Bragg, North Carolina , found him guilty on charges of maltreatment and assault, but acquitted him of both negligent murder and harassment. Chen, 19, killed himself by gunshot in a guard tower in southern Afghanistan, where military prosecutors said the weeks of physical mistreatment and racial harassment he encountered from his superiors pushed him to take his own life. 2 charged in laundromat homicide

Image
STAMFORD -- Just over a month after a beloved city man was beaten to death inside a Stillwater Avenue laundromat, police arrested two men in connection with the slaying, which police believe was a stunt to get noticed by a growing West Side gang. Ivan Silva-Perez, 19, of 23 Ann St., Stamford, was charged Monday with murder in the commission of a felony, among other charges, for robbing and killing 50-year-old Jimmy DeCrescenzo the night of June 25. A second man, 35-year-old Elmer Saenz-Machado, who police say Silva-Perez had enlisted to help in an attempted robbery of DeCrescenzo, was charged with felony murder, first-degree robbery and conspiracy. The two men were arraigned in state Superior Court in Stamford on Tuesday. Judge Ken Povodator maintained their bonds at $ 1 million each and transferred their cases to the Part A docket where more serious cases are handled. They are scheduled to return to court Aug. 7. DeCresenzo's body was found at about 1:30 a.m. the morn

Drew Peterson murder trial under way in Illinois

Image
JOLIET, Ill . (AP) — The judge presiding over former Illinois police officer Drew Peterson 's murder trial has denied a defense request to declare a mistrial over something the head prosecutor said during his opening statement . Judge Edward Burmila briefly sent jurors from the Joliet courtroom while attorneys argued whether lead prosecutor James Glasgow 's mention of $ 25,000 that the former Bolingbrook officer allegedly offered a hit man to kill his third wife, Kathleen Savio, warranted a mistrial. Burmila says it didn't because Glasgow didn't say the money was offered to a hit man or that it was allegedly meant as payment to kill Savio. Peterson is charged with first-degree murder in Savio's 2004 drowning death. He is suspected but not charged in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson. Camden's July homicide toll makes it the deadliest month since 1949

Image
July's homicide toll in Camden reached 13 over the weekend, authorities said Monday, making this month the deadliest in the city in more than six decades. Not since September 1949, when paranoid schizophrenic Howard Unruh went on a shooting spree that claimed 13 lives, has a month been as bloody. As of Sunday night, there had been 39 homicides in Camden this year, compared with 26 during the same period in 2011, according to figures from the Camden County Prosecutor's Office. Most of this year's homicides are believed to have been drug-related, authorities say. If the current pace continues, the city will not only exceed last year's total of 49 homicides, it also could surpass the record of 58 homicides set in 1995, figures show. Investigators are working overtime just to respond to cases, Camden County Prosecutor Warren Faulk said Monday. "These guys are going from one to the next and not having time to do the follow-up investigation, the second and

Colo. suspect charged with 24 counts of murder

Image
CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) — Colorado prosecutors on Monday charged a former neuroscience graduate student with 24 counts of murder and 116 counts of attempted murder in the shooting rampage at the midnight showing of the new Batman movie. James Holmes appeared just as dazed as he did in his first court appearance last week, but at one point exchanged a few words with one of his attorneys in the packed courtroom. The breakdown of the charges was not immediately clear. The attack at " The Dark Knight Rises " left 12 people dead and 58 others injured. After his arrest, police said they found that his apartment was booby trapped. Among the charges Monday was one count of possession of explosives. Legal analysts expect the case to be dominated by arguments over the defendant's sanity. Unlike Holmes' first court appearance July 23, Monday's hearing was not televised. At the request of the defense, District Chief Judge William Sylvester barred video and st

FERRISBURGH, Vt.— Police say a 25-year-old Vermont man is now facing a charge of second-degree homicide in connection with a fight that resulted in another man's death. State police said Sunday that Joseph Bolduc of Burlington will be arraigned Monday in Addison County Criminal Court. Besides the homicide charge, he's charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, driving with a suspended license, resisting arrest and attempting to disarm an officer. Police say Bolduc was one of several people involved in a fight at a bonfire in Ferrisburgh shortly before midnight Friday. Forty-year-old Conrad Bell of Vergennes died as a result of his injuries. Officials say an autopsy has been completed and investigators are waiting a report from the medical examiner on the cause and manner of death. © Copyright 2012 Associated Press. All rights reserved. Bo wife murder charge vexes skeptical Chinese

Image
BEIJING, China (Reuters) - China 's ruling Communist Party might insist that the murder charge against Gu Kailai , the wife of ousted Politburo member Bo Xilai , is a simple case of all being equal before the law, but winning over the jury of public opinion is proving tough. Since China's last big political scandal -- the purge of Shanghai party chief Chen Liangyu in 2007 -- its citizens have flocked to sign up to the Twitter-like microblogging site Sina Weibo, ensuring this time there will be lively public debate about the case against Bo and Gu, despite tight censorship. In its first official statement on Gu's case since April, state news agency Xinhua ran a brief report last week saying China will try Gu on charges of murdering a British businessman. The news spread rapidly on Weibo. While state media generally stuck to reprinting that story, the influential tabloid the Global Times on Friday wrote an editorial warning nobody was above the law. But that is
