Murder probe over 'ashes mugging'

A murder investigation has begun after the death of a woman in Greater Manchester during an apparent mugging.

Nellie Geraghty, 79, died in Oldham Hospital on Friday, a day after being found with head injuries in Shaw.

Police think she was injured as she tried to stop her handbag containing her late husband's ashes from being stolen. Two boys, 17 and 14, are being questioned on suspicion of murder.

Mrs Geraghty's family has paid tribute to the "best mum in the world".

In a statement, her family said: "Nellie is much loved and will always be remembered by all her friends and family.

"Heaven will be blessed with your presence. Our sad loss is heaven's gain.

"We will miss you terribly. Until we meet again, my mum, my sister, my friend, rest in peace."

The former school cleaner and cotton mill worker was found near her home in Shaw, on a path at the junction of Kershaw Street and Victoria Street, just before noon on Thursday.

Her handbag was missing but the strap was still in her hand.

In the bag, she kept the ashes of her husband, Frank, a former cotton mill worker who died 17 years ago.

The couple had four children.

The two teenagers being questioned were originally arrested on suspicion of robbery.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

EVERETT -- Police on Wednesday were canvassing the View Ridge-Madison neighborhood in Everett after a man was found dead there the night before. A neighbor spotted the man on the ground outside a vacant house at 22 Madison St. He called 911 about 6:20 p.m. The man had obvious signs of trauma to his torso, police said. He looked to be in his late 20s or early 30s. The Everett Major Crimes Unit is investigating the death as a homicide, Lt. Robert Goetz said. Manslaughter charges possible in boy's death

Published: Thursday, August 23, 2012, 5:55 p.m. MONROE -- Detectives believe a 7-year-old Monroe boy's parents should face second-degree manslaughter charges in connection with his January overdose death. Monroe police this week wrapped up their probe into the boy's Jan. 30 death and forwarded the case to prosecutors to decide if his parents should face criminal charges. Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Lisa Paul likely will begin reviewing the case in the coming days. She doesn't expect to make a charging decision in the near future, however. "It's quite an extensive investigation, and I want to review it thoroughly before I make any decision," she said. The boy, identified as "A.J." in court papers, ingested a lethal amount of salicylates, a chemical common in aspirin and other over-the-counter drugs.
