Landrieu Reveals Murder Reduction Initiative

Joined by community leaders and local law enforcement officers, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu revealed on Tuesday a new crime-fighting imitative that he hoped would cut the city's murder rate. The initiative is part of his Saving Our Sons New Orleans, La. Campaign, and residents said it's about time the city did something about the violence on the streets."They got youngsters with AK-47s, and you can't stop them? What is this -- little Iraq? "(My son) was murdered on the streets. They got enough bloodshed going on," local mother Yvette Holden said.Holden buried her son, 23-year-old Elijah Grant, a week ago after witnesses said he died a hero while protecting innocent children from gunfire."I refuse to believe that homicides can't be prevented," U.S. Attorney Jim Letten said."If we knew the answer, we would have told everybody already. If we would have known the answer, we would have scaled it across the country already. We don't know the answer. We're finding the answer," Landrieu said.Landrieu said the city's adopting a model from the Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission -- one that reduced the city's murder rate by 52 percent from 2005 to 2009 by taking a community approach to fighting crime. The mayor said the plan involves reorganizing assets and a continued investment in the programs and services for young people."The whole thing comes to this -- the Police Department can do a very important piece, but the rest has come under this strategic command," New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Ronal Serpas said.Landrieu said the city's tried lots of things in the past to reduce the murder rate, but he's hopeful that the new plan will work. The mayor noted other crime-fighting initiatives at Tuesday's news conference -- more money for the city's recreation department, more money to help teens get jobs and a ceasefire program. The mayor said that 90 percent of the city's murders are committed by young black men, and 90 percent of the victims fal! l in tha t same category.
