Fight At Album Release Party Led To Hartford Homicide - Hartford Courant

HARTFORD—

The city's 24th homicide on Nov. 18 started as a fight between a local artist and a disc jockey over what songs to play during an album release party at a bar on Park Street, according to an arrest warrant.

The suspect in the homicide, 29-year-old Andre Gill, was one of several performers featured during the party put on by a local artists group, Spoiled Boy Entertainment, the warrant states.

Gill was arraigned Friday at Superior Court in Hartford on one count each of murder, carrying a pistol without a permit, criminal use of a firearm and two counts of tampering with a witness.

A bail commissioner said Gill has several convictions between 1999 and 2008 for various charges, including possession of narcotics, criminal mischief, threatening, failure to appear, assault and breach of peace.

He remains in custody with bail set at $ 1 million and is scheduled to return to court Dec. 13.

A video of the party at Mi Bar shows a performer named Arkeit "Nitty" Iverson fighting with the DJ about which songs should be played on stage. Iverson is seen pushing two other performers and Gill while trying to get to the DJ, the warrant states.

According to the warrant, the video producer told police he regularly shoots rap performances and then sells the footage to the rappers for distribution.

The video later shows the shooting victim, Fred Kejuan "Cuzo" Pines, grabbing, choking and pushing Gill.

Gill and his cousin, Shi McKenzie, are seen leaving the stage quickly and disappear from the view of the camera.

Some people left the bar during the fight, including Pines, who was seen going after Gill. Witnesses saw Gill grab a chrome handgun from car and put on square-rimmed glasses, the warrant states.

"This [expletive] hit my sister," Gill yelled, the warrant states.

One witness said he tried to calm Gill. He held him against the wall of a parking lot until the witness heard a gunshot close to his left ear and let him go, the warrant states.

More than one person saw Gill fire at Pines, who yelled, "You ain't even hit me," the warrant states.

Emergency dispatchers were called at 12:09 a.m. Police officers who responded found Pines lying on the ground in front of the bar, at 1995 Park St., with a bullet wound in his chest, the warrant states.

He was pronounced dead at 8:15 after surgery that morning.

Gill initially told investigators that he performed at the bar through the night without encountering any problems. He changed his story once he was told that several witnesses had seen him fight with Pines. He said that a friend he knew only as "Grease" shot Pines' with a .380-caliber handgun, the warrant states.

Gill said he left the bar with his two cousins. Gill is also accused of asking his cousins to lie to police and provide him with an alibi so he wouldn't be charged with murder, the warrant states.
