Kane County prosecutors have dropped manslaughter charges against a 39-year-old Aurora Township woman in the death of her 14-month-old daughter.

Gloria Gomez, of the 1000 block of Bryant Street, was charged in June after an autopsy found the child had suffered internal injuries.

The charge against Gomez was dropped earlier this month. But because prosecutors dropped the manslaughter charge — as opposed to a judge dismissing the charge — Gomez could still be charged with manslaughter or another crime.

Gomez was being held on $ 250,000 bond and an immigration detainer.

Gomez was accused in the June 23 death of her daughter, Aleidy Gomez.

Police and paramedics were called to Gomez's home at about 2:45 a.m. that day for the report of a 14-month-old girl who was not conscious and not breathing. When they arrived, Gomez was holding Aleidy in a beach towel, according to evidence presented at a bail hearing. The girl was unconscious and not breathing. She was taken to Provena Mercy Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

According to testimony, another girl in the house told police that Gomez had found Aleidy on her back in bed, cold to the touch. Police said there were no immediate signs of injury. At the bond call, it was revealed that the infant had red marks on her back and side; lacerations to her liver and kidney; three broken ribs; hemorrhaging on her neck and throat; as well as multiple diaphragm injuries. The cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma to her abdomen.

Gomez later admitted to police that she hit the child numerous times in the back and neck, according to evidence presented at the hearing.

Police said Gomez has been living in the Aurora area for at least a year, and at the Bryant Street address near North Aurora for about a month. She has three other children in Aurora: boys age 3, 5 and 8, police said. Police said Gomez had five other children in Mexico — one girl and four boys. The children in Aurora had been put in foster care, police said.

At the bond hearing, Gomez said she found occasional temporary work in landscaping and gardening.
