Murder fugitive sought in Mesa County after accidently shooting accomplice

The Denver Post's crime and courts reporters take you beyond the press release in this blog, with stories about crooks, cops and kooks.

A murder fugitive who was surrounded by SWAT team members in Grand Junction early this morning eluded Mesa County deputies, authorities say.

"He should be considered armed and dangerous," said Lisa McCammon, Mesa County Sheriff's spokeswoman.

Sheriff's deputies issued a reverse 911 to warn neighbors that Joshua Ringold could still be in the neighborhood.

Ringold, 22, is wanted in the early Friday murder of an alleged accomplice, who was 16, in a home-invasion robbery involving three suspects in which the homeowner was also shot.

Ringold of Grand Junction is being sought for investigation of murder, attempted murder, aggravated robbery, burglary, two counts of first degree assault and menacing, McCammon said.

The Mesa County Coroner's Office identified the dead suspect as Cody R. English, of Grand Junction. The cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest.

English was apparently shot by mistake in confusion during an altercation in which the homeowner struck at least one of the suspects with a metal pipe.

Sheriff's deputies previously arrested the third suspect, Jeremiah Carey, 20, of Grand Junction. He is being held without bond in the Mesa County Detention Facility on one count of aggravated robbery and burglary.

Three suspects allegedly entered a home at 293 ½ 28 Rd. in the Orchard Mesa neighborhood at 12:15 a.m. Friday to commit a home-invasion robbery.

Ringold was the only one of the three suspects to elude deputies.

Early Saturday morning, Mesa County deputies tracked Ringold to a house in the 2900 block of Globe Willow Ave., McCammon said.

Ringold fled from law enforcement before he could be caught, she said. It is not clear how he was able to escape.

A reverse 911 call was placed to residents in the area to warn them of Ringold, who is considered armed and dangerous, McCammon said.
