One man is dead after being shot by a fellow construction worker in the chest, Miami police said.

Jose Perez, 48, was charged with manslaughter after police say he shot 58-year-old Jorge Mendez Alvarez Monday morning at a construction site.

At the time, both men were employed by Horizon Contractors Inc. The company declined comment regarding the matter.

According to Perez's arrest affidavit, he and Alvarez were horse-playing when Alvarez started "swinging a knife." Perez grabbed a handgun and shot Alvarez.

Perez "removed the magazine from the gun" but said he believed the gun to be empty, reports state.

It was around 9:15 a.m. when Miami police arrived at 716 NE 85th St., an empty lot undergoing construction.

Alvarez was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he later died.

According to county records, Perez was charged with two counts of battery in January 2010. He also has a history of domestic violence.

Perez was arrested Monday and released on bond Tuesday morning, records show.
