Attempted homicide suspect weighs plea deal

The prosecution made a plea offer Monday to the attorney of a 25-year-old Plover man accused of attempting to kill his girlfriend.

Andrew B. Ulrick will have a status conference Dec. 20, a meeting that could change to a plea hearing if Ulrick accepts the deal.

Portage County District Attorney Tom Eagon declined to discuss specifics of the offer, and Ulrick's attorney, Gary Kryshak, still had to discuss it with his client, who is being held in the Lincoln County Jail on a $ 20,000 bond. Kryshak could not be reached for comment Monday.

Ulrick has been charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide for allegedly pinning down and strangling his girlfriend. At an October hearing in which Ulrick stood mute on the charges, Kryshak argued Ulrick was never trying to kill his girlfriend.

He faces up to 60 years in prison for the felony. Ulrick also pleaded not guilty to charges of strangulation, domestic-related battery, obstructing an officer and disorderly conduct, all stemming from a Sept. 19 incident at the couple's home.

At the October hearing, a Plover police officer who responded to the home testified Ulrick's girlfriend said he voluntarily removed his hands from her throat, and that she was concerned Ulrick would harm himself.

Shortly after Ulrick was arrested and charged, his girlfriend changed her story, which is not unusual for victims of domestic abuse, Eagon said.

Eagon also has met with the girlfriend and explained to her why he was moving forward with the charges, and they now have a relatively good relationship, Eagon said.
