GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Jalaya Carter would have turned four years old last Saturday, but she was pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital on Friday.

Grand Rapids Police
investigators confirmed Jalaya's death was a homicide on Monday, but did not release details of how the young girl died.

"She was waiting for her birthday," recalled her grandfather, Larry Loveless, who said he'd seen Jalaya the day before she died when the family gathered for the Thanksgiving holiday. "I don't know what happened."

Loveless said an autopsy revealed that Jalaya had internal bleeding in her abdomen that may have come from a blow to or pressure on that portion of her body. He said he is not aware of any suspects in the matter.

While he has heard that the death has been classified as a homicide, Loveless said he doesn't know enough information to be entirely convinced that is true.

"They say it was a homicide. Who would want to do something to someone as sweet as this?" said Loveless.

He described Jalaya as a 'clumsy' child with a small frame, adding that she recently fell off of her bed and had previously fallen from her bicycle.

When Loveless saw her on Thanksgiving day, he said she seemed out of character and appeared not to be feeling well. But nothing, he said, that would have made him believe that she would die the next day.

He got a phone call from Jalaya's mother Tiffany Loveless as his granddaughter was being rushed to the hospital from her home at the Traditions Condominiums near 44th Street and Breton Road.

"I could hear the ambulance sounds in the background," he said. "(Tiffany) said Jalaya wasn't breathing."

Later, Tiffany Loveless told Larry Loveless about the autopsy:

"She just broke down and said my baby was hurting," said Loveless.

Jalaya was a young girl with a big personality, Loveless said. He often referred to Jalaya as the 'boss' because she often told on her siblings if she thought they were misbehaving.

It's important, Loveless said, that he find out what led to Jalaya's death.

"I want justice to be served if somebody did something to this baby."

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward by calling authorities or contacting Silent Observer at 616.774.2345.

"She never got to be four years old," Loveless said. "Right now she's in God's arms."
