Man charged in Fayetteville double-homicide - Burlington Times News

FAYETTEVILLE -- Fayetteville police have charged a man with murder in a double homicide that took place off Rosehill Road late Wednesday night, according to court records.

Jermaine Lamar Johnson, 24, listed as homeless, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Tierra Nicole Underwood, 29, and Benita Diane McMillan, 26, according to court documents.

Family members say the women were cousins and that Johnson is the father of McMillan's 1-month-old child.

Police allege that Johnson arrived at the apartment at 209 Melvin Place, at the intersection of Rosehill Road, and shot both women in the head about 9 p.m.

Underwood's three children, ages 8, 4 and 1, were present at the time of the shooting, according to her family.

Underwood's mother, Linda Walter, said in a tearful interview at the scene that her 8-year-old granddaughter had seen Johnson come in and shoot her mother and aunt in the head.

McMillan and Johnson had a rocky past, she said.

"They've been having issues for the longest," Walter said. "He's one of them deadly jealous men, that's what he is. Very jealous."

Police were called to the scene when Johnson came to the door of a neighbor, Shanda Carroll, 28, who lives across the street from the apartment.

Carroll said she had been waiting for her daughter to come home when the man, who she said had blood on his hands and clothing, ran up with a baby in his arms, telling her to call 911.

"I was like, 'What's wrong with the baby?' He was like, 'Just call 911. Two women just got shot,' " Carroll said. "So I closed the door and I locked it and I called 911."

Police arrived and took Johnson into custody. Carroll said she heard the man tell officers that the gun was still inside the house.

According to a police affidavit filed in court, officers arrived to find Johnson saying he had shot two people at the nearby apartment. Police found the bodies lying outside at the back door of the home.

During a subsequent interview at police headquarters, Johnson admitted shooting the women in the head, the affidavit says.

Walter said her daughter was working at Wendy's in Spring Lake, trying to raise her three children by herself.

A friend of Underwood's, Kanesha Burks, said she had just talked to her about a half hour before the shootings. She called her friend on the phone but got no answer and then came out to find police and crime scene tape, she said.

Burks said she was not surprised to learn that Johnson is accused of killing the child's mother.

"He was kind of ugly and nasty," Burks said.

Johnson was being held at the Cumberland County jail without bail.
