Image
Police investigating the homicide of Paeroa businessman Jordan Voudouris, have arrested a convicted drug dealer who's been on the run for two and a half years. 57-year-old Steven Mehrtens was granted electronic bail in 2010 but managed to remove the bracelet and take off. He's now been found him living on a small rural property near Katikati - and has today been sentenced to two months' jail for removing the bracelet and fleeing. He'll be sentenced next week for manufacture and supply of methamphetamine. Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Whitehead says Mehrtens' arrest appears to have no connection to the still unsolved killing of Mr Voudouris. He's urging anyone with information relevant to the fatal shooting to contact the Operation Olive team or call crime stoppers. Read More @ Source Criminal Stories Here

Chef found guilty of murder in boiled body case

Image
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A chef who told police he boiled his wife's body for four days to hide evidence of her death was convicted Thursday of second-degree murder. David Viens showed no reaction as the verdict was read. The sister of his victim burst out sobbing. In a recorded interrogation presented by prosecutors during the trial, Viens, 49, can be heard saying he cooked the body of his 39-year-old wife, Dawn Viens , in late 2009 until little was left but her skull. "He treated her like a piece of meat and got rid of her," said Karen Patterson, the couple's best friend who spoke to reporters outside court. She was the key witness in Viens' trial and the person who prodded police to investigate her friend's disappearance. At a news conference, she tearfully warned others to take heed of domestic violence among friends and call police. She apologized for failing to call 911 when Dawn Viens called her during an incident of abuse but begged her not to

New Oland manslaughter search warrant details to be released

New Brunswick's chief provincial court judge has ruled additional information should be released from the sealed warrants in the year-old Richard Oland manslaughter investigation. Chief Judge R. Leslie Jackson released his decision on Friday morning. "I have concluded that the police have not demonstrated a serious and specific risk to the investigative integrity of the Oland manslaughter investigation; indeed their position is based on vague and general assertions of risk," Jackson stated in his 20-page decision. "Other than the issue of hallmark evidence, which I did deal with later, there has been no legal basis established for most of the redacting sought to be retained, such as the names and statements of persons who are neither suspects, persons of interest or subjects of search warrants." But information about the physical position and condition of Oland's body, as well as the condition of his office and location of any of his personal eff

NY tour bus driver manslaughter trial opens

The bus driver blamed for a Bronx wreck that left 15 gamblers dead was asleep at the wheel because he had been tooling around town instead of resting before the deadly crash, prosecutors charged Thursday. Cell phone and car rental records show that when Ophadell Williams "was supposed to be sleeping during daytime hours, he was in various parts of the city and Nassau (County)," Assistant District Attorney Gary Weil as the driver's manslaughter trial got under way. "The evidence will show that he fell asleep or was so fatigued he could no longer pay attention to what was happening," Weil said. "He knew the risks of driving while fatigued and ignored those risks and, as a result, 15 people died." Williams' lawyer insisted his client got plenty of sleep a

IE hit-run: Homicide unit probes woman's death

Image
WINCHESTER, RIVERSIDE COUNTY (KABC) -- Law enforcement announced in a statement Thursday that a murder unit had taken over the investigation of a 68-year-old woman's death near French Valley. Earlier, the California Highway Patrol had been leading the investigation as a possible hit and run after a coroner's report concluded Wanda McGlover suffered injuries consistent with being struck by a car -- findings the victim's children disagreed with. "This was not a hit and run, she was approached and brutally attacked and murdered. They dragged her from one side of the street to the next and wanted her to die in the ditch," said McGlover's daughter, who asked not to be identified. McGlover's daughter, who lives in Georgia, says her mother called her to talk while out on a morning walk. Their conversation came to a sudden and frightening end 20 minutes later. "She said excuse me, they grabbed her phone, I heard them grab her phone and she scre

Fresh murder charge over ex-nurse killing

Image
A teenager whose murder trial was abandoned by prosecutors will now face a new murder charge over the killing of retired nurse Pirjo Kemppainen, the Court of Criminal Appeal has heard. The 63-year-old Adelaide hills woman was stabbed and bludgeoned to death with a brick at her Callington home in September 2010. Prosecutors said the "heinous" and "brutal" crime was a random attack. Two boys aged 14 were arrested for murder. One pleaded guilty and is serving a 15-year non-parole term in jail. The second boy had been due to stand trial last month, but prosecutors dropped the charge. Director of Public Prosecutions Adam Kimber then applied to increase the first boy's sentence. He has now told the Court of Criminal Appeal that due to a change of circumstances he wants to adjourn that application, because the second boy will now be re-charged. Suppression orders prevent the ABC from revealing the reasons for the changes in the case. Read More @ S
