Winnipeg police investigating first homicide of 2013

Winnipeg police have a suspect in custody in connection with the city's first homicide of 2013, which involves two separate crime scenes, CBC News has confirmed.

Officers were first called to the 500 block of Kylemore Avenue in the south Osborne neighbourhood on Thursday morning about a stabbing, then later in the day, at about 1:30 p.m., they were called to the 100 block of Pear Tree Bay in south St. Vital.

There, police said, they found a woman's body in a vehicle.

Residents in the area told CBC News that officers set up privacy screens around the car while they worked for the next four hours. Police have yet to confirm the cause of the woman's death, but said they are treating it as a homicide.

Zahira Haman lives on Pear Tree and said she saw police open the trunk of a Honda Civic.

"They opened the trunk by tools or something and covered it with a blanket," said Haman.

An autopsy on the woman's body is pending, and the homicide unit is now conducting interviews. Officers said both crime scenes appeared to be connected to the homicide.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
