Gangster among weekend homicide victims

Homicide investigators around B.C. were swamped Monday after eight people were found dead in five separate incidents over 24 hours.

Surrey was the scene of two fatal shooting incidents Sunday night that left three men slain.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team confirmed Monday that one of the victims, Manjot Singh Dhillon, 27, was a gangster who died in a targeted shooting.

The Vancouver Sun has learned that Dhillon once worked for the late Sukh Dhak in the Surrey drug trade, but more recently was aligned to several different crews.

Dhak was gunned down in Burnaby on Nov. 26 along with his bodyguard Thomas Mantel.

Dhillon was found critically wounded on the road near 168th Street and 76th Avenue just before 7 p.m. He died in hospital later Sunday.

Dhillon had several trafficking convictions from 2005 and 2009. He had also been found guilty of assault, uttering threats, break and enter and wilfully resisting a police officer and had served a couple of terms in jail and received two lifetime firearms prohibitions.

Just hours after Dhillon was killed, two other men were shot to death in the parkade of an apartment complex at 9450 128th St.

IHIT Sgt. Jennifer Pound said it appears the double murder is unrelated to Dhillon's shooting. And she said while the victims were known to police for property crimes, they are not believed to have gang links.

Surrey RCMP received several 911 calls of shots fired close to 11: 30 p.m. When police arrived, two men were lying dead from gunshot wounds.

Pound said police haven't yet discovered the motive.

Pound said a green SUV or pickup truck towing a box utility trailer was seen driving erratically from the area north on 128th Street.

IHIT is asking anyone with information on either Surrey shooting to contact investigators at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email ihittipline@rcmpgrc.gc.ca

IHIT was also called to a rural Hope property Sunday, where two men were found dead inside a house.

While their names have not been released, Pound said the case is now a suspected murder-suicide.

The Upper Fraser Valley Regional RCMP detachment arrived at the house in the 69100 block of Othello Rd. just before 2: 30 a.m. and found the dead men inside.

North District RCMP were also dealing with two suspicious deaths in Van-derhoof Sunday evening.

Blaine Albert Barfoot, 29, and Tara Lee Ann Williams, 40, were found dead inside a home, though the cause of death has not been released.

Both were known to police. Barfoot was to appear in Vanderhoof Provincial Court Feb. 4 on an assault charge laid last year. He had convictions for uttering threats, mischief, wilfully resisting a police officer and breach of conditions. Williams had no record in the online court database.

Meanwhile, Nanaimo RCMP arrested a suspect after a fatal stabbing in the island community Sunday afternoon. Gabriel Peter Stinson, 40, appeared in Provincial Court Monday, on one count of second-degree murder. He was remanded in custody until his next appearance on Jan. 29.

The 35-year old victim was found lying in front of an apartment complex in the 500 block of Fifth St. in Nanaimo at about 1: 45 p.m.

Stinson was performing CPR on the bleeding man, who was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"Nanaimo RCMP is confident that it was not a random act of violence but a confrontation that ended tragically," Const. Sherri Wade said.
