Man accused of triple homicide at Las Vegas home

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police say a Las Vegas man who botched his own suicide after killing three family members will face murder charges.

Las Vegas police said Wednesday that 54-year-old James McCarty remained hospitalized with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head following the Tuesday afternoon shooting at a home in a residential community several miles west of the Las Vegas Strip.

Police say McCarty is expected to survive and will be arrested when he recovers.

Investigators haven't described a motive for the shootings, and the Clark County coroner hasn't released the names of the man and two women who died.

Police summoned to a report of gunshots found blood on the back patio and bullet holes in a window before SWAT officers entered the house and found McCarty and the others.

Flint's battlefield: A three-year murder map

FLINT, MI -- There have been 189 murders in the city since 2010. Below is a map of the locations of each murder in the last three years, as well as the names of the slain on Flint's battlefield. The spike in murders occurred almost immediately after large-scale layoffs in March of 2010. By year's end the city had set a record with 66 murders, breaking the previous mark of 61 set in 1986. Killing continued in 2011 with 57 murders. A look at the map shows the majority of the murders took place on the north and east sides, historically the most economically depressed areas of the city. Just 25 murders in the last three years occurred south of Court Street. The map is color-coded by year.
