Neighbours of a Picton woman found dead at her home yesterday say they heard yelling and jumped the fence to restrain a man holding an axe.

The 43-year-old, who police haven't named yet, was found dead at a Scotland Street address and two people - believed to be a man and a woman - have been arrested in relation to the incident.

The Marlborough Express reports the woman lived at the address with her three children, including a 19-year-old son with schizophrenia.

Neighbours told the newspaper they heard yelling at the address and when they jumped the fence, discovered a person standing in the backyard with an axe.

No one else is being sought in relation to the incident.
