Homicide squad investigates house fire

Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a man in a house fire in St Albans, in Melbourne's west.

The 21-year-old died at the scene and one person was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police believe the man's housemate and a neighbour tried to drag him to safety.

One man is being interviewed and police expect to speak to others, as they investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

Detective sergeant Rob Nazaretian says there are some concerning aspects about the scene.

"The manslaughter squad and the arson squad are making preliminary investigations to establish the exact nature of the what's taken place," he said.

The single-storey brick home was well alight when fire crews arrived in Grantham Parade at 3:30am (AEDT).

Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman Phil Taylor says it was an intense blaze.

"Our crews arrived to find flames issuing from a majority of the windows," he said.

"There were power lines down in the street."

He says his colleagues are coping with the tragedy.

"The fire brigade's got very good support systems for our people for these types of events and obviously firefighters are trained to expect that they may encounter these types of things from time to time," he said.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established..
