Manslaughter jury about to retire

AFL players were among those who gave character evidence during a manslaughter case in the District Court at Port Augusta.

Nicholas Daniel Cunningham, 21, of Port Lincoln is on trial for the alleged manslaughter of Dean Johnson, 18, from Port Augusta, after a fight at Streaky Bay in the early hours of New Year's Day in 2011.

AFL players Scott Lysett and Derick Wanganeen knew Cunningham through football on Eyre Peninsula and at the Port Adelaide Magpies.

Both testified he was not violent and had a trustworthy reputation.

But the prosecution said Cunningham hit Mr Johnson out of aggression rather than self-defence and his retaliation had been disproportionate to the threat.

The jury is about to deliberate.
